The Great Panama Canal

On December 31, 1999, a day before the 2nd Millennium, control of the Panama Canal was transferred to Panama by the U.S. The canal was built by the U.S. to shorten the travel time of ships from the Atlantic to the Pacific and to make the transportation of goods faster. It is considered one of the most difficult engineering projects ever undertaken in history, taking 35 years to complete. There is controversy surrounding the possibility that the newly elected President Trump may seek to re-acquire the canal.
