The End of Tobacco Monopoly

On December 31, 1882, the government tobacco monopoly was abolished, and the cultivation and trade of tobacco were transferred to private hands. At that time, there were five government-run cigar and cigarette factories—Malabon, Arroceros, Meisig, El Fortin, and Cavite—employing around 20,000 workers.
