The First Filipino Christian Martyr

Today, September 29, 1637, Lorenzo Ruiz was executed by the Tokugawa Shogunate during the persecution of Christians in Japan. He had gone to Japan with a Japanese priest to seek asylum after being falsely accused of killing a Spaniard. Due to Ruiz's Christian faith, Japan was concerned that religion might lead the country away from Buddhism. Lorenzo Ruiz became the first Filipino martyr.
